"When you've become a great pirate" is 1 of the virtually iconic lines that Shanks said to Luffy. Without a doubt, Shanks played a big role in Luffy and his pirate journeying. Merely what could be his adjacent role in the One Slice series?

So as presently as Shanks encounter the Five Elders, the entire One Piece customs broke downwards into speculation as to how Shanks is a snake and what sort of double agent he is against the Pirate Era. I've had plenty of ideas on how he was the one making Roger sick etc but I think I've got information technology.

But from the very beginning of the story, everything Luffy has e'er known about piracy has been instilled in him by Shanks. Shanks teaches Luffy all about being a pirate and then substantially negs him into being ane by repeatedly calling him weak and a child.

Afterwards the Higuma incident Shanks disappears for months on cease to sea, and then happens to come dorsum at the exact same fourth dimension that Higuma shows upwards for the beginning time in months to bear witness Luffy one terminal lesson virtually piracy, the one that is nigh impactful on Luffy as a person.

In his scheming, he promises Kaido that should he allow Shanks to stop the Battle of Marineford, he will further the growth of his Joyboy candidate and fix him in the direction of Kaido in the future. Kaido would be given an opportunity at a 1v1 with Joyboy himself.

Because Shanks knows Luffy and knows that he isn't ready yet at Marineford and that seeing what unfolded would force Luffy to become stronger because Luffy is a D and his spirit would never be truly broke. Luffy would realize he must be the strongest to be free.

And to become the strongest Luffy must defeat the Yonko. In saving Luffy at Marineford, Shanks gear up him on a standoff course with the Yonko and Kaido. Shanks has never controlled Luffy, simply every time we meet Shanks he is gently influencing Luffy in a direction.

Because of Shanks, Luffy has the lid, the fruit, and the will to become a great pirate, all of these are things nosotros know the WG profoundly fears or cares nearly, and at some indicate that cannot be a coincidence.

And so my theory goes that Luffy was never born to be Joyboy, that whatsoever D can go a host for Joyboy, and in giving him the chapeau and fruit Shanks was merely setting someone up who would have the optimum run a risk to go and then. He set up Luffy on course to fight for liberty…

And I know this is all a stretch, Shanks might merely be a nice guy who likes being a pirate. But when we alter our perspective even slightly it is like shooting fish in a barrel to see this man has ulterior motives. I do note that he sobbed when Roger came back from Raftel…why?

Honestly, that'south about all I have, it's more food for idea than testify and I've rambled A LOT. Just there'southward a lot happening and nosotros won't know for certain for a while I approximate, just I retrieve it would be cool if Shanks had been an antagonist to Luffy all forth, but non a villain.
